present an illustrated lecture on a "vernacular spectacular," The Mardi
Gras Indians of New Orleans and their culture. Reception follows.

Claiborne Avenue. "The History of Trinity Episcopal Church in New
Orleans." Attorney Thomas Tucker will speak on his forthcoming history
of Trinity Church, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary. Reception

Jackson Square. Professor Theodore Crackel, Ph. D., is Director
and Editor of the Papers of the War Department 1784-1800. He will
speak on the life of General James Wilkinson.
Thursday, January 8, 1998. Jean Laffite
has told us what an important role he played at the Battle of New Orleans.
New evidence gives new credibility to his Journal. Come listen to a talk
on Jean Laffite's role in the Battle of New Orleans by Dale Olson, president
of the Laffite Society of Galveston.

founding, decline and rebirth of the New Orleans City Park Botanical Gardens.

Avenue. Professor Vernon Palmer of the Tulane School of Law will
discuss the Black Code in a comparative context through the 18thcentury.

The Louisiana Historical Society sponsors monthly historical lectures
on the second Tuesday of September, October, November, March, April, and
May. The lectures commence at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church
at 5401 S. Claiborne Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana. They conclude with
refreshments and are open to all. The Lecture to commemorate the Louisiana
Purchase is held at the Sala Capitular in the Cabildo on Jackson Square
near December 20 of each year. The celebration of the American victory
over the British at the Battle of New Orleans is held on January 8 of each
year at a local restaurant.
